Galatasaray recently shared a photo of Mauro Icardi sporting a blackened eye following the derby match against Fenerbahce in the Turkish League. The post was subtly criticized by Edin Dzeko. The Intercontinental Derby unfolded in the 18th week of the Turkish League at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Sunday (24/12/2023).

The match was intense, with a total of 7 yellow cards issued by the referee, 3 for Fenerbahce and 4 for Galatasaray. The game concluded in a goalless draw. An incident occurred involving Galatasaray’s striker, Mauro Icardi, who fell during a ball dispute in the penalty box, with his face hitting the goalpost.

Several Galatasaray players protested, claiming a penalty should have been awarded for the incident. They argued that Icardi was brought down by the opponent before colliding with the goalpost. Galatasaray posted a photo of Icardi after the game, revealing the blackened area below his right eye due to the impact.

“Those who only seek justice for themselves continue to manipulate Turkish football from all channels tonight! VAR room and 26 cameras cannot see, and we feel ashamed on their behalf. Those who have brought Turkish football to this point will be ashamed,” tweeted Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce responded to Galatasaray’s post of Icardi’s blackened eye, sarcastically alluding to their attempt to create victimization through a player hitting the goalpost. “Attempting to create victimization through a player hitting the goalpost. We leave it to public wisdom,” replied Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce’s captain, Edin Dzeko, also mocked Galatasaray’s post about Icardi’s blackened eye, calling it embarrassing for hoping for a penalty from such an incident. “Icardi hits the goalpost with his head, and they put it on Instagram and cry for a penalty… truly typical of them. Embarrassing,” wrote Dzeko on social media.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are closely competing at the top of the Turkish League standings, holding the first and second positions with 44 points each.
