FIFA World Cup U-17 2023: A Pivotal Moment for Indonesian Football

The ongoing FIFA World Cup U-17 2023 in Indonesia signifies a monumental moment for Indonesian football. In particular, the 21 players competing in this event have navigated through an extensive selection process, underscoring the significance of this opportunity for the young talents of Indonesia. What adds immense value to this experience is the direct mentorship provided by former Belgian national team player, Radja Nainggolan.

Erick Thohir, the Chairman of PSSI, emphasized that this opportunity extends beyond the tournament itself, aiming for the long-term success of the players.

“Let’s ensure that the U-17 World Cup is not just an event; it should leave a lasting legacy for many young Indonesian players. As we consistently advocate, we appreciate football legends, especially those with Indonesian roots.

It’s a source of pride, their presence to promote the U-17 World Cup. But, most importantly, it’s to inspire the young generation,” expressed Erick in a statement on Saturday (11/11/2023).

All players participating have successfully passed the #BersamaGarudaMudaMenduni selection program, an initiative by PSSI to discover the best young talents across Indonesia, beginning in July 2023, with the support of PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) (Persero) Tbk.

Beyond the selection program, there’s also a coaching clinic for U-15 players from Football Schools (SSB) in Indonesia. In a clinic held at BRILiaN Stadium Jakarta on Wednesday (8/11), former Belgian national team player Radja Nainggolan provided valuable insights.

Known for his extensive career in European football, playing in Serie A with AS ROMA, Inter Milan, SPAL (Serie C), and in the Belgian League with Royal Antwerp, Radja Nainggolan imparts invaluable knowledge to the young generation of Indonesia. His familial ties to Batak further enhance the connection with Indonesia.

Sunarso, the CEO of BRI, expressed his support for the formation of Indonesia’s golden generation in football. He hopes that this program will yield young talents capable of elevating Indonesia’s football achievements.

“We must support our youth from every aspect. We need a vision; championship teams must be built and prepared well in advance,” concluded Sunarso.
