The two teams initially played a goalless first half. Anthony Gordon proved to be the difference-maker with his goal in the second half, precisely in the 55th minute.

Manchester United appeared to have equalized in the 88th minute. Antony found the back of the net through a shot inside the penalty box.

However, Antony’s goal was disallowed as the ball struck his teammate, Harry Maguire. MU’s defender was already in an offside position when Antony’s shot hit him.

The disallowed goal for Antony ensured that Manchester United left St James’ Park empty-handed. This marked the sixth defeat for Erik ten Hag’s squad in the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

A video of Antony’s disallowed goal due to Maguire’s offside went viral on social media. Many sympathized with the unfortunate turn of events for the English defender.

Maguire indeed had a commendable performance before Antony’s goal was disallowed. Sofascore awarded Maguire a rating of 7.1, the highest among MU players, along with Alejandro Garnacho, who also received a rating of 7.1.

According to Sofascore, Maguire made 6 clearances, 3 blocks, and 3 tackles against Newcastle. He was also involved in 11 duels (winning 3) and 6 aerial battles (winning 3) against the opponents.

“Maguire thwarted Antony’s goal after his outstanding performance,” tweeted one fan on Twitter.

“Harry Maguire showcased a great performance, but how unlucky he was to cancel Antony’s goal due to offside,” another MU fan wrote.

The defeat against Newcastle United pushed Manchester United down to seventh place in the standings with 24 points. The Red Devils are now trailing 9 points behind Arsenal, who currently lead the table.
