Manchester United’s Harry Maguire faced public mockery from Ghanaian politician Isaac Adongo last year, who used Maguire’s on-field struggles as a metaphor in a political context. Adongo criticized Maguire during a parliamentary session, associating the defender’s performance with alleged economic mismanagement by the New Patriotic Party.

“Maguire poses the biggest threat in Manchester United’s defensive midfield, tackling Manchester players, and providing assists to the opponents. Mr. Speaker, when you see the opponents scoring, Maguire will score for them,” remarked Adongo in the 2022 Ghanaian parliamentary session.

Adongo’s comments came during a challenging period for Maguire at Manchester United, marked by defensive errors leading to the team’s defeats. The English defender even faced exclusion from the squad under Erik ten Hag and was reportedly close to being transferred to West Ham United in the summer of 2023.

Despite these challenges, Maguire opted to stay with Manchester United, fighting to reclaim his place in the starting lineup. His persistence paid off, and he has made 11 appearances for MU this season.

In a surprising turn of events, Isaac Adongo acknowledged Maguire’s transformation during a Ghanaian parliamentary session on Wednesday (22/11/2023). He issued a public apology to the player and praised him as a key figure for Manchester United.

“Mr. Speaker, I now apologize to Harry Maguire… Today, Maguire has transformed and is a transformational footballer. Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United. Mr. Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United,” stated Adongo, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

Maguire responded to Adongo’s apology with grace. In a post on social media, the 30-year-old player accepted the apology and even offered Adongo tickets to watch a Manchester United match at Old Trafford.

“Apology accepted from Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo. See you at Old Trafford soon,” tweeted Harry Maguire.
