In a compelling Spanish League encounter, Real Madrid outclassed Villarreal with a resounding 4-1 victory, earning three crucial points that propelled them past Girona to claim the current top spot in the standings.

At Santiago Bernabeu on Monday (18/12/2023) in the early hours of WIB, Madrid seized the lead in the 25th minute. Jude Bellingham expertly headed home a cross from Luka Modric, deceiving Villarreal’s goalkeeper, Filip Jorgensen.

Rodrygo extended the home team’s advantage in the 37th minute. Amidst the chaos of a corner kick, the Brazilian striker pounced on a loose ball in front of Villarreal’s goal, netting for the second time past Jorgensen. The score remained 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Villarreal narrowed the gap in the 54th minute. Jose Luis Morales finished a breakthrough pass from Ramon Terrats with a shot that initially hit Madrid’s goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, before finding the back of the net.

However, Brahim Diaz restored Madrid’s lead in the 64th minute. Receiving a pass from Fran Garcia, the former AC Milan player executed an individual play towards Villarreal’s penalty area. Despite being closely marked by three opposing players, he successfully breached Jorgensen’s goal.

Modric sealed Madrid’s victory with a 4-1 scoreline in the 68th minute. Capitalizing on a loose ball in the penalty area after Rodrygo’s attempt was thwarted by Villarreal’s defense, Modric’s shot to the left corner eluded Jorgensen’s reach.

With this result, Madrid has accumulated 42 points from 17 matches, edging ahead by one point over Girona, who have played 16 games and are set to face Alaves on Tuesday (19/12). Meanwhile, Villarreal sits in the 14th position with a total of 16 points.
