In a gripping Round of 16 clash at Jakarta International Stadium on Wednesday (22/11/2023), Uzbekistan secured a notable 2-1 victory over England. The White Wolves took an early lead through Amirbek Saidov in the 4th minute.

England’s Three Lions managed to level the score with Joel Ndala’s goal in the 35th minute. However, the decisive moment came with Lazizbek Mirzae’s free-kick goal in the 67th minute, securing Uzbekistan’s triumph.

In the final minutes, Uzbekistan faced adversity as their coach, Jamaluddin Rakhmatullaev, received a red card due to touchline tension. However, this did not deter Uzbekistan’s determination to maintain their lead.

Uzbekistan’s journey continues to the quarterfinals, while England bids farewell to the 2023 World Cup.

This achievement mirrors Uzbekistan’s previous best performance in the U-17 World Cup when they reached the quarterfinals in 2011. Currently, Uzbekistan stands as the sole Asian representative in the 2023 U-17 World Cup, as Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Iran have exited the tournament.

Coach Anvar Rakhimov acknowledges the significance of being the last Asian team standing but emphasizes that this achievement is a testament to the hard work of his players, supported by the will of God. Uzbekistan is determined to carry this impressive form into the upcoming rounds.

“I can’t comment much on this. Allah helped us through all of this, and the players kept trying and trying. This is undoubtedly a good thing for us and not something ordinary,” expressed Rakhimov after the match against England.
